What Are Peer Helpers?

Peer Helpers is a program which is designed on the school-based mental health model. The program works not only through a group of students but also through all educators to build a positive school climate and culture.  Peer Helpers is a multi-tiered prevention and support program comprised of 3 components. We know that our students’ safety and mental health have a direct impact on their development and success. We are pleased to share this comprehensive approach to meeting our students' needs. The first component is P.A.T.H. (Prevention & Awareness for Total Health). All educators will be provided prevention curriculum to utilize in your classrooms. These short 20-30 minute turnkey, scripted lessons address a variety of mental health and public health concerns including the topics of abuse, bullying, substance use, and suicide in grade level specific curriculum. Layering the PATH prevention curriculum with students trained in communication and referral skills brings to life the second component of the program, the student Peer Helpers. Students apply to become Peer Helpers, and those selected should represent the diversity within our campus. Peer Helpers are trained in 5 Core Skills and must adhere to the program’s Code of Ethics.
